Cremation or Burial? What is the best choice for you? Those people that think about their funerals often have a view about whether a cremation or burial is best for them. Laura Richardson discusses what the best option is in this article . . .

Many people hold strong views regarding whether they would prefer to be buried or cremated after
death. However, there are many people in Braintree who are undecided. In some cases where no
preference has been stated within a valid Will or as part of a Pre-paid Funeral Plan, the decision is
made by the family of the deceased. Choosing between burial and cremation is therefore an
important part of your funeral planning. Andrew Douglas Wills and Legal Services have compiled
some information to consider when deciding between cremation and burial.

Burial

Burials tend to cost more than cremation. This is not the least because you will have to lease a burial
plot. If you choose a plot outside the area in which you live then this will usually cost more than a
local plot. When choosing a plot it is also important to consider how your loved ones would wish to
mark your plot. Some cemeteries are very strict and only allow certain plot decorations, others are
more lenient.

One of the most popular reasons for choosing burial is that it provides your loved ones with a site to
visit to remember you and feel close to you when you are gone. This may help your family and
friends during their grieving.

Cremation

Cremations are used for around 75% of people who die in the UK. One of the leading factors is the
lower cost. Another reason many favour cremation is that it can give a more flexible memorial. For example,
your ashes can be stored in a memorial urn which your loved ones can keep so that they will always
be “near you” regardless of whether they move locations. Alternatively, your ashes could be
scattered in a meaningful place, be buried in a small size burial plot, or even made into a “diamond”
to be kept or worn within a piece of jewelry.

Cremation is also considered to be a more environmentally friendly option, due to the fact that
there is an ever-increasing shortage of land. However, cremation is not accepted by all religions and therefore you may wish to avoid cremation on religious grounds.

Once you have made your decision between cremation and burial, it is important that you record
your wishes. You are able to state your preference within your Will. However, it is not legally binding
when recorded in this way. Therefore you may wish to consider a Pre-paid Funeral Plan. A Pre-paid
Funeral Plan is tailored to suit your requirements and because you have paid in advance for the
service of your choice, you can ensure that your wishes will be carried out.
