When it comes to the matter of will writing in Essex and what celebrities can teach us in this regard, it feels like the start of 2016 has sadly provided plenty of lessons in this regard since the news has been too full of much-loved celebrities passing away: David Bowie, Sir Terry Wogan, Paul Daniels and, most recently, Ronnie Corbett.

However, other than successful careers spanning decades and a unique place in the hearts of the British public, what else do they have in common that could teach us about will writing in Essex? Getting their affairs in order is the answer and while we grieve them, we can also learn a lesson about planning for the worst – and, when it happens, gifting our loved ones’ peace of mind.

David Bowie, for example, was not just a musical genius – he was also a canny chap, writing (back in April 2004) a 20-page will leaving instructions on how his estate should be divided and outlining his wish to have his ashes scattered on Bali after a Buddhist ceremony.

Meanwhile, the iconic comedian, Ronnie Corbett reportedly sold the £1.3 million mansion in Croydon that had been his home for 33 years to avoid his two daughters having to pay a six-figure inheritance tax bill.

This forward-thinking and planning places them in stark contrast to celebrities who have died intestate – and gifted the press lurid headlines about warring relatives and family feuds as a result.

By way of illustration, Bob Marley had an eight-month battle with cancer before his untimely death at the age of 36 in 1981 but his Rastafarian beliefs prevented him from writing a will. The feuds over his £30 million estate started straight after his funeral.

Nevertheless, even if you do not have a £100 million fortune like Bowie or a home that is worth over £1 million like Ronnie Corbett, writing a will detailing how your estate will be divided after you have gone is important, not just for your own peace of mind but for your family’s too.
