So you finally get around to writing your Will. You have done the hard part, right? Wrong! Is your Will safely stored? In her latest article, Laura Richardson recognises the need to ensure that your Will is safely stored until such time as it is needed . . .

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..

Preparing for the holiday season in Essex often involves bringing decorations down from the loft or out of the garage ready to create a festive feel in homes across the county. Having been in storage for nearly a year, there are often some decorative items that don’t turn up straight away, or seem to have vanished! Maybe some other items have been damaged, through damp storage conditions or perhaps they were not stored in suitable containers and have been damaged under heavier items. Whatever the reason, it is often the case that some decorations are unusable for this year’s holiday season, which although upsetting, is not normally a life changing catastrophe!

However, what if your Will was stored in the same place as your winter holiday decorations?

If your Will was irreversibly damaged by damp or misplaced among other items, this could cause great difficulties for your loved ones should you die. It is vitally important that your Will is stored in a safe place within which it is protected from loss or damage such as damp, fire, pests, or wear and tear, and also that it can be easily accessed by your family or Executor on your passing.  Should your Will be lost or irreversibly damaged when you die, you would effectively be treated as if you had died intestate and therefore your Estate would be divided up in accordance with UK law, which may be vastly different to how you would wish!

One of the recommended ways to store your Will is through a Will storage company.
